WASHINGTON, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Former world number
one Andy Roddick anounced his withdrawal from the Los Angeles Open on Friday
after sustaining a side strain.
The top seed at the ATP event, ranked 10th currently in the world, suffered the injury in his second-round match with fellow American Scott Oudsema on Thursday, and considered
quitting before winning 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.
"I think you have to look at the big picture," said
the 2003 U.S.Open champion after setting up a quarter-final clash against eighth
seed Dmitry Tursunov of Russia. "I'm not going to risk all I have going for me
now."
Roddick, 23, has dropped out of the top 10 in the
rankings this month for the first time since 2002, though he reached the final
of last week's RCA Championships in Indianapolis before losing 4-6,6-4, 7-6 to
Davis Cup team mate James Blake. Enditem
