PANGANDARAN, Indonesia, July 21 (Indonesia) -- Most fishermen in the
Indonesian town of Ciamis have lost their fishing boats in the tsunami that
swept through the southern Java coasts Monday, the fishermen association said
Friday.
"The tsunami has destroyed about 95 percent of 7,200 fishing boats in
Ciamis," said Jeje Wiradinata, chairman of the Ciamis fishermen association.
The damages have inflicted a loss of an estimated 272 billion rupiah (about
29.6 million U.S. dollars) to Ciamis fishermen, he said at the Pangandaran
resort beach in Ciamis.
Wiradinata said there are about 15,000 fishermen in Ciamis, which bore the
brunt of Monday's tsunami that killed over 550 people. Enditem
