PANGANDARAN, Indonesia, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Friday told the rescue team to continue searching for survivors of Monday's tsunami which devastated the southern Java coast.

"Looking back to the tsunami disaster in Aceh (on Dec. 26, 2004), the evacuation team could still find survivors one week after the disaster in some remote places," Susilo said when visiting the Pangandaran resort beach in West Java province that bore the brunt of the disaster.

"The search for victims must continue," he said.

There were conflicting reports about the death toll, with government agencies putting the figure at between 557 and 565.

Pangandaran, some 250 km southeast of Jakarta, accounted for more than a half of the casualties.

The differences came as victims listed as missing were already buried in several mass graves, an official with the Ministry of Social Affairs said. Enditem
