JAKARTA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- At least 547 people were
killed, 465 injured and 323 still missing in the tsunami disaster, triggered by
a 6.8 magnitude quake, hitting Indonesia's Java island on Monday, National
Disaster Management Coordination Board said here Thursday.
An official in charge of the board, Setio
Sutarmo, told Xinhua that over 5,541 people had also taken refugee at camps and
tents, after giant waves struck onto land and damaged buildings and
infrastructure in the southern coastal areas of Indonesia's West Java, Central
Java and Yogyakarta provinces.
Indonesia plans to install tsunami early warning
system in the waters off southern Java and Bali islands this year, Research and
Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman said on Thursday.
The buoys would be set up in quake-vulnerable zones
with high population density and huge amount of assets, he said.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has
said that the government would update and improve tsunami detector device to
give early warnings to people.
The president earlier has also warned head of
districts across the country whose areas are laid above vulnerable quake areas
to be on alert and prepare for possible disaster.
Indonesia lies in a zone known as the Pacific "ring
of fire," which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Enditem
