                  DPRK strongly criticizes UN resolution on missile tests

    PYONGYANG, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The Foreign Ministry of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Sunday strongly criticized a UN Security Council resolution on its missile tests, saying the DPRK will not be bound by the resolution.

    "Our Republic vehemently denounces and roundly refutes the UNSC resolution," said a statement of the DPRK Foreign Ministry carried by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

    Calling the resolution "a product of the U.S. hostile policy toward the DPRK," the statement said that the DPRK "will bolster its war deterrent for self-defense in every way by all means and methods now that the situation has reached the worst phase."  Full story <<<

                  UN resolution on DPRK missile tests draws mixed reactions

    BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- UN Security Council Saturday's resolution on the missile tests of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has drawn mixed reactions from among the countries involved in the six-party talks.

    U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in St. Petersburg, Russia, where she is accompanying President George W. Bush for the G8 summit, that China's "affirmative vote" for the resolution had showed a sense of "responsibility."  Full story <<<

    UNITED NATIONS, July 15 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council(UNSC) on Saturday unanimously approved a resolution on the missile tests of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), calling for the early resumption of the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.

    After days of wrangling over the language of the resolution, the council members finally reached agreement to remove any reference to the Chapter 7 of the UN Charter which authorizes sanctions or even military action.  Full story <<<

                   Japan poised to impose sanctions on DPRK  

    TOKYO, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Japan is preparing to impose economic sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) after Pyongyang rejected a UN Security Council resolution on its recent missile tests, Japanese media reported Monday.

    Tokyo is considering banning cash remittances and freezing the country's assets, according to major Japanese newspapers, including business daily Nihon Keizai.  Full story <<<
