BAGHDAD, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Unidentified gunmen abducted a senior Iraqi oil official in Baghdad on Sunday, a well-informed government source said.

Adel Qazaz, head of Iraq's North Oil Company, was stopped by gunmen shortly after leaving the Oil Ministry, said the source, adding that Qazaz was then snatched from his car and taken away. The state-run North Oil Company manages Iraq's northern oilfields.

On Saturday, gunmen kidnapped head of Iraq's Olympic Committee Ahmed al-Hadjiya along with dozens of others in central Baghdad. Kidnapping has become almost a daily phenomenon in Iraq as violence continues to infest the country over three years after the U.S.-led invasion. Enditem
