The UN Security Council debated on Friday the ongoing Lebanon-Israeli conflict in an emergency meeting Friday, with the Lebanese delegate calling for international help to end a massive Israeli offensive against his country.

    BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A three-member team sent by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to defuse the Middle East crisis arrived in the Egyptian capital of Cairo late Friday.

    The three men were Annan's special political advisor Vijay Nambiar, the UN envoy to the Middle East Alvaro de Soto and special envoy Terje Roed-Larsen.

    They are expected to meet Egyptian officials and consult with Arab foreign ministers, who will convene an emergency meeting in Cairo on Saturday.  Full story <<<

    UN Security Council debates Lebanon-Israeli conflict

    UNITED NATIONS, July 14 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council debated on Friday the ongoing Lebanon-Israeli conflict in an emergency meeting Friday, with the Lebanese delegate calling for international help to end a massive Israeli offensive against his country.

    The meeting was convened at the request of Lebanon shortly after Israeli warplanes bombed southern Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah, raising fears of escalating the conflict into a full war.

    The Lebanese ambassador to the United Nations, Nouhad Mahmoud, called on the council to "take a clear decision to establish a ceasefire and the aerial and sea blockade imposed on Lebanon."  Full story <<<
