China urges progress of six-party talks on DPRK nuclear issue

    BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan said Monday that China will firmly promote the process of the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.

    Tang made the remarks in a phone conversation with Secretary of State of the United States Condoleezza Rice on Monday, according to sources with the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

    He said no matter what happens, China will firmly safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and promote the process of the six-party talks to realize the goal of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.

    China hopes all parties concerned will make joint constructive efforts for the above goal, said Tang. Enditem

Chinese FM talks with 12 FMs via phone on DPRK's test-firing of missiles

    BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing talked on Sunday with his 12 counterparts on the review by the United Nations Security Council on the test-firing of missiles by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

    Li exchanged views on the issue in phone conversations with foreign ministers of eleven member countries of the UN Security Council and the Republic of Korea.

    Li stressed that any action should be conducive to maintaining the peace and stability in the region and the unity of the UN Security Council."

    Li had discussed with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on UN's response to the missile tests by the DPRK via telephone on Saturday.

    The UN Security Council met Wednesday for an emergency meeting to discuss the DPRK's missile tests, which launched seven missiles on Wednesday morning.

    Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said earlier that China hopes the UN response to the DPRK's missile tests will be helpful in promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

    China believes that instead of seeking sanctions against Pyongyang, the UN Security Council can best make a unanimous and firm response to DPRK's missile launch "through a statement that sends a strong message", said Wang Guangya, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, on Friday. China, DPRK sign agreement on economic, technology co-op

    PYONGYANG, July 10 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Monday signed here an agreement on economic and technology cooperation between the two governments.

    The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Ministry of Foreign Trade of the DPRK.

    Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who arrived in Pyongyang on Monday for a five-day official visit to the DPRK, and the DPRK's Vice Premier Guak Bom-gi attended the signing ceremony.

    Hui was accompanied by Wu Dawei, Chinese vice foreign minister and China's chief negotiator to the six-party talks on the nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula. Enditem

China, DPRK mark 45th anniversary of friendship treaty

    BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Monday exchanged congratulatory messages on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between China and the DPRK.

    Chinese President and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao, respectively exchanged congratulations with DPRK's top leader and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Worker's Party of Korea, Kim Jong Il, DPRK's top legislator Kim Yong Nam and Premier Pak Bong Ju, speaking highly of the development of the bilateral relations.
