Mexico's Lopez Obrador vows to legally challenge presidential poll result

MEXICO CITY, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Thursday he would legally challenge the results of Sunday's presidential election.

Lopez Obrador urged electoral officials to carry out a manual ballot-by-ballot count, instead of just tallying vote totals as they have been doing. He also called for a public rally in the capital's main square to defend his vote.

"We are going to the Federal Electoral Tribunal with the same demand, that the votes be counted, because we cannot accept these results," he said at a news conference.

Mexico's ruling party presidential candidate Felipe Calderon has received 35.62 percent of the vote with 98 percent of the ballots tallied, taking a slight lead over Lopez Obrador, who got 35.57 percent, the Federal Electoral Institute said on Thursday.

It was the first time since counting began early on Wednesday that Calderon had held the lead. Enditem
