NEW DELHI, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The Indian Navy will acquire three additional Talwar-class stealth frigates from Russia at a cost of 55.14 billion Rupees (1.22 billion U.S. dollars), the Indian government announced Thursday.
The Cabinet Committee on Security, which met under the chairmanship of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here, gave its approval to the purchase, according to Indo Asian News Service.
Of the total cost, 51.14 billion Rupees (1.13 billion U.S. dollars) will be the cost of the warships and 4 billion Rupees (88 million U.S. dollars) for additional equipment to be fitted on, Indian Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee said after the meeting.
The first ship will arrive in India within five years after the signing of the contract, the Indo Asian News Service said.
The committee also approved the procurement of 28 submarine-launched Klub land attack missiles at a cost of 8.44 billion Rupees (187 million U.S. dollars), it added. Enditem
