RAMALLAH, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas might postpone a referendum on a document of national accordance, media reported on Wednesday.

The Jerusalem-based Palestinian daily of al-Quds quoted senior officials close to Abbas as saying that he might postpone the referendum scheduled for July 26 and announce another date.

The officials said that the reason why Abbas might postpone the referendum is the situation on the ground in the Palestinian territories due to the ongoing Israeli military offensives.

The offensives were launched last week to free a captive Israeli soldier who was kidnapped by Palestinian militants on June 25.

Two weeks before the soldier was abducted, Abbas issued a presidential decree on holding a referendum on July 26 if Hamas does not accept the document issued by Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The document calls for a two-state solution, ending conflict through negotiations and forming a Palestinian national government. Enditem
