WASHINGTON, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The United States said on Monday that it will work with the winner in Mexico's presidential race and expressed confidence that a winner will be announced soon.

"The Mexican government has announced that they will declare a winner, we think on Wednesday, and at that point, the president will congratulate the winner," White House spokesman Tony Snow said at a briefing.

"We are going to work with the government of Mexico. It's an ally and neighbor, and obviously, we've got a great number of shared interests, and we'll continue working with the Mexican government," Snow said.

Mexico's presidential election was too close to call and results would not be announced at least until Wednesday, Mexican electoral authorities said on Sunday. But two front-runners have both claimed victory in the vote.

"The margin of difference is too narrow, it is not possible to announce which candidate won," Luis Ugalde, president of the Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute, said three hours after the voting concluded. Enditem

Preliminary results give Calderon slim lead in Mexican presidential race

MEXICO CITY, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Felipe Calderon, the presidential candidate from Mexico's ruling National Action Party, had a slim lead over his left-wing rival Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, preliminary official results showed on Monday.

With returns from nearly almost 98 percent of polling stations, Calderon got 13,962,094 votes and had a lead of 400,000 votes over Obrador who managed to have 13,579,916 votes.

Mexico's official election body, the Federal Electoral Agency (IFE), said it would start a recount on Wednesday because the election was too close to call.

Both candidates immediately declared victory after election and again on Monday. Enditem
