KHARTOUM, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Top UN envoy in Sudan called on Monday for quick implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA), which was reached between the Sudanese government and a main Darfur rebel faction on May 5.

    "The first priority is a timely implementation of what has been agreed, because non-implementation would reinforce the position of those who have so far rejected the agreement," Jan Pronk said in a statement.

    Urging all rebel groups in Sudan's western region of Darfur to sign the DPA, Pronk stressed the necessity "to broaden the circle of support for the peace agreement."

    He also ruled out re-opening the negotiations between the Sudanese government and the Darfur rebels to revise the peace agreement, saying "we should stick to the text of the agreement."

    However, the UN envoy said the DPA needed minor modification to ensure credible international security guarantees, visible disarmament of the Janjaweed militia, more money for compensation and a tangible reconstruction. Enditem
