    MEXICO CITY, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Voters went to the polls on Sunday in Mexico's presidential and congressional elections.

    Voting opened at 8:00 a.m. local time (1300 GMT) and voters began to cast their ballots at 130,500 polling stations across the country to choose their new president, 500 deputies and 128 senators.

    The latest opinion poll showed that, of the five candidates running for the president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) and his main rival Felipe Calderon of the ruling National Action Party (PAN) are leading with around 36 percent and 33 percent respectively.

    Meanwhile, Mexicans will also choose three state governors and more than 100 mayors, including that of Mexico City.

    Nearly 41,000 overseas Mexicans, who had returned home for the election, are voting for the first time in history.

    The polling stations will be closed at 6:00 p.m. local time (2300 GMT) on Sunday. Enditem
