WASHINGTON, June 28 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Senate on Wednesday confirmed Henry Paulson as the next U.S. treasury secretary about one month after he was nominated by President George W. Bush to replace John Snow.

The U.S. Senate approved the nomination in a voice vote just hours after the nomination won the endorsement of the Senate Finance Committee which oversees the Treasury Department.

As the top economic salesman of President Bush, Paulson will take the Treasury helm at a challenging time for the economy with growth slowing and inflation rising.

During the confirmation hearing in the U.S. Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday, Paulson said that he will try to improve America's global competitiveness by ensuring that U.S. companies are treated fairly in trade matters and by keeping taxes down.

Paulson, 60, has served as chief executive of the Goldman Sachs Group since 1999 and was nominated at the end of May by President Bush to replace John Snow as new U.S. Treasury Secretary. Enditem
