HONG KONG, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, chairman
of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative
Conference (CPPCC), on Wednesday urged Hong Kong members of the CPPCC National
Committee to play a more active role in Hong Kong's social and political
affairs, apart from participating in the government and political affairs of the
nation.
During his meeting with Hong Kong and Macao members
of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee and Hong Kong members
of the CPPCC National Committee, Jia said, Hong Kong members have been an
important force in implementing the principle of "One Country, Two Systems" and
also participator in national reform and development undertakings.
Jia said the members have made contributions to Hong
Kong's smooth return to the motherland as well as to Hong Kong's stability and
prosperity since the returning. The central government spoke highly of the
contributions made by the members.
He urged the members to support the Hong Kong Chief
Executive and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government to
govern by law.
He also called on members to unite with personnel
from all walks of life to build Hong Kong into a fair, democratic and legal
society.
Jia said the central government's policies on HKSAR
are to maintain Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability.
"What has been done by the central government is for
the sake of Hong Kong," Jia told the members.
Jia said the central government will continue to
unswervingly carry out the principles of " One Country, Two Systems" and handle
the Hong Kong affairs in accordance with the Basic Law.
He said the central government fully supports the
Chief Executive and HKSAR government to govern by law, supports Hong Kong in
consolidating its status as an international financial, trade and shipping
center and maintaining its long-term prosperity and stability.
Liao Hui, vice chairman of the CPPCC National
Committee and director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State
Council, Tung Chee Hwa, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, Zheng
Wantong, secretary-general of the CPPCC National Committee, and Donald Tsang,
HKSAR Chief Executive also attended the meeting.
Accompanied by Donald Tsang, Jia Qinglin also visited
Hong Kong's IT flagship the Cyberport on Wednesday morning.
At the Cyberport, Jia took a closer look at the
development of the city's creative industry by visiting Centro Digital Pictures
Ltd., a leading animation and visual-effects studio and entertainment production
outfit.
Jia encouraged the local film and animation industry
to strengthen cooperation with the Chinese mainland whose market has a great
potential.
After visiting the Cyberport, Jia arrived at the
Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR and met with
heads of the Central Government organs in Hong Kong and Chinese mainland-funded
ventures.
The CPPCC chairman expressed his hope that these
organs and ventures will make all out efforts to make greater contributions to
Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability.
During his breakfast with Tung Chee Hwa on Wednesday
morning, Jia spoke highly of Tung's work and achievements since Tung took the
office as vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee in March 2005.
Jia Qinglin arrived in Hong Kong on Tuesday to attend
activities marking the third anniversary of the signing of the Chinese
mainland/Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA).
