WASHINGTON, June 25 (Xinhua) -- The United States said on Sunday that Iraq's reconciliation takes time and it supports efforts by Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to achieve reconciliation.

"We know that reconciliation needs to be an Iraqi process led by Iraqis. That being said of course, we stand by ready to assist in this effort if the Iraqis request our help," White House spokesman Ken Lisaius said.

"The process is going to take time to fully develop and evolve. We understand that," Lisaius said.

The remarks came after Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki presented his new national reconciliation plan to the parliament earlier Sunday.

"To all those who want reconstruction and reconciliation, we present the olive branch," Maliki told lawmakers in his televised speech, with the aim of curbing the flaring Sunni-Arab led insurgency and help to bridge the country's deepening communal divisions.

Hundreds of people have been killed in sectarian strives in the country. Enditem
