Death toll climbs to 114 in landslide in Indonesia

The number of people killed in the Tuesday's landslide and flood climbed to 114 and 22 others were still missing, a local official said on Wednesday.

    JAKARTA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The number of people killed in the Tuesday's landslide and flood climbed to 114 and 22 others were still missing, a local official said on Wednesday.

    The fatalities were from several parts of the province in east Indonesia, including the districts of Sinjai, the worst hit area, Goa, Bulukumba, Bantaeng, Jeme Ponto, Bone, official in charge on the disaster post in Makasar, the capital of the province Syafar Izham said.

    "The latest data we get, the death is 114 and 22 missing," Izham told Xinhua in telephone from the province.

    He said that the natural disaster also damaged hundreds of houses.

    The rescue team was searching those who were still missing, said Izham.

    So far, some aids has arrived in the hit areas, he said.

    Separately here, coordinating Minister for People Wefare and Poverty Alleviation Aburizal Bakrie said that at least 800 people have been internally displaced after the disaster caused by the three consecutive days torrential rains.

    Some aids, including logistic and medicine, finance, and other equipment for the victims, had been under way to the province, he added.

    "One Hercules has flied carrying the aids. Ten thousands of blankets and foods, Rubber boats, we have sent there just now. Some medicine have been sent, but most of them to be sent tomorrow," he told Xinhua after a cabinet meeting at the State Palace here.

    The government has allocated about 1 billion rupiah (some 100 000 U.S. dollars) to the area.

    Indonesia, which is located in tropical areas, often suffers from landslide due to rampant deforestation. Enditem
