Tibetan railway offers more job opportunities

    BEIJING, June 21 -- The first group of 80 cleaners of Qinghai-Tibet Railway Tibetan section commences a 10-day training today to meet the railway operation on July 1.

    Near 600 Tibetans signed up for this cleaning job along Qinghai-Tibet Railway. 80 including 61 Tibetans and 19 Han people were selected to attend the training, introduced by Tibet Job Administration.

    It's one of jobs offered by Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Railway worker, trainman and trackman have become new words in Tibetan language.

    "I feel so proud to be a railway worker at the first generation." Phurbu Tsering has just graduated from Lanzhou Jiaotong University. Now he is a trainee at Golmud Station of Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

    Over 500 Tibetans have been trained as trackmen or railway technicians since the railway construction's start in 2001. Parts of them, especially the Tibetan university graduates have stepped in work.

    Life of Tibetans is being changed by the jobs which railway brings to. Nyima, head of Sema Village in Doilungdeqen County said that, villagers who attended the railway construction could earn 8,000 yuan (about 1,000 US dollars) every year, about twice or 3 times than farming.

    According to the statistic of Tibet Job Administration, 5-year railway construction offers 6,000 jobs for local Tibetans, it takes near 100 million yuan (about 12.5 million US dollars) added income to local farmers and herders.

    Even the living idea has been changed. "I will run my park lot and restaurant here when the cargo station is set up." said Nyima, an agelong farmer.

    "The data of increasing job opportunities in Tibet is equivalent to its population go-up, and it will see a further increase after the operation of Qinghai-Tibet Railway, to meet the employment demand of Tibetans." told by Sun Yong, director of an office on policy research of Tibet Party Committee.

    Sun said that, Tibetan government was expediting the job training for Tibetan farmers and herders, and preferential treatment would be given to them on the job obtaining.

    This year, Tibetan financial department allocates 40 million yuan (about 5 million US dollars) to the job training for the redundant labor force. 80,000 rural residents will obtain new jobs in urban Tibet as planned.
