China to continue to promote all human rights

    GENEVA, June 20 (Xinhua) -- China has made important contributions to the cause of human rights, and it will continue to make efforts to promote all human rights, a senior government official said here on Tuesday.

    The Chinese people once suffered greatly from aggression by imperialist powers, fighting among warlords, turbulence and poverty, and that is why they are keenly aware of the value of peace, development and human rights, said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. Full Story>>

 

New UN human rights body opens 1st session

    GENEVA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The first session of the UN Human Rights Council opened here Monday, marking a new era of the world's efforts to improve respect for human rights.

    The 47-member new council replaced the former 53-nation Human Rights Commission, which became discredited in recent years for its politicization and ineffectiveness.Full Story>>

EU calls for respecting human rights in combating terrorism

    GENEVA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The fight against terrorism must be carried out with full respect for human rights, the European Union stressed here on Monday.

    "The EU firmly believes that successfully combating terrorism and respect for human rights are mutually reinforcing," said Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency. Full Story>>

Brazil: countries can learn from each other on human rights

    GENEVA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said here on Monday that different countries can learn from each other on human rights as no country's human rights records are perfect.

    "In human rights, there are neither masters, with nothing to learn, nor pupils, with nothing to teach. We can all learn from each other," Amorim told the inaugural session of the UN Human Rights Council. Full Story>>

Annan to attend Human Rights Council's 1st meeting

    UNITED NATIONS, June 16 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will be in Europe from Sunday for the inaugural gathering of the new Human Rights Council and a conference on disarmament in Geneva.

    Annan will first address the World Food Program's (WFP) bi-annual global meeting on Sunday in Copenhagen, before meeting Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and other members of the government, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Friday.  Full Story>>

    BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese delegation will attend the first meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council to beheld in Geneva from June 19 to 30, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tuesday.

    "China attaches great importance to the meeting," said Jiang Yu, noting that Sha Zukang, top Chinese diplomat to the UN office in Geneva, will head the Chinese delegation and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi will address the meeting. Full Story>>

China, Canada, Norway to discuss human rights issues

    BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- China, Canada and Norway will hold a symposium on human rights at the end of this year to further cooperation in this field, an official from the Chinese Foreign Ministry told Xinhua here on Friday.

    The China-Canada-Norway Plural Symposium on Human Rights will also invite more than 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region to participate, a senior official from the International Organization and Conference Department said at the 9th China-Norway Round Table on Human Rights and the Rule of Law. Full Story>>

China makes progress in human rights protection: EU official

    VIENNA, May 26 (Xinhua) - China has made progress in human rights protection and promotion, said a European Union (EU) official at the 21st round of China-EU Human Rights Dialogue here on Friday.
