Special report: Hamas-led cabinet takes office
RAMALLAH, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat on Monday urged the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas)-led government to adopt a satisfactory political platform that would help avoiding more international boycotts.
"The current government must know that it's not Hamas government, it's the people's one, so it has to reconsider its accounts to save the territories from the reflection of security deterioration in the region," Erekat told reporters.
Erekat, meanwhile, denied reports over a summit meeting that would include Egypt, Syria, Jordan and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).
He, however, said that Abbas has held separated talks with his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak and Jordan's king Abdullah IIof Jordan.
According to Erekat, the main point of the talks was the "difficult conditions in the Arab region and the security deterioration witnessed in some Arab countries like Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Syria".
Abbas' regional tour comes amid regional pressure on the Hamas-led government to accept a new plan of settling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by peace negotiations based on the principle of two-state solution.
The plan also requires Hamas to recognize the Arab peace initiative that Arab leaders adopted in Beirut Arab summit in 2002,but Hamas shows no positive stance towards the initiative presented by Saudi Arabia.
"If the Palestinian government wants to succeed, it has to abide by Arab and international legitimacy's resolutions," said Erekat. Enditem
