Saddam Hussein trial resumes in Baghdad

    BAGHDAD, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The trial of Saddam Hussein andseven of his co-defendants on charges of crimes against humanityresumed on Monday in a Baghdad court.

    The 35th session on Monday started with hearing the memorandumof the complainers' clients, which is the closing statement of theprosecutors.

    Chief Judge Raouf Abdul Rahman has set June 19 for prosecutors'final argument and July 10 for defense lawyers' final memorandums. On June 13th session, the judge declared an end to the defensetestimony on the Saddam trial, prompting protests from Saddam'slawyers.

    The defense lawyers claimed that they were not given fairchances to present their case and wanted to put more witnesses onthe stand.

    Saddam and his seven aides are charged with crimes againsthumanity for the killing of 148 Shiites in the northern village ofDujail after a failed assassination attempt on Saddam's life therein 1982.

    If convicted, Saddam and his aides might face death penalty. Enditem
