Special Report: Tension accelerates in Iraq

    BEIJING, June 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Two U.S. soldiers were kidnapped by insurgents on Friday night in Iraq and the U.S. troops are searching thoroughly day and night, the American command in Baghdad said Sunday.

    A local farmer claiming to have witnessed an attack on a U.S. military checkpoint said the insurgents killed the driver of a military vehicle before taking another two U.S. soldiers captive.

    The checkpoint was not far from Youssifiyah, 12 miles south of Baghdad. The region is in the so-called triangle of death, where insurgents frequently ambushes U.S. and Iraqi troops.

    ¡°Coalition and Iraqi forces will continue to search everywhere possible, uncovering every stone, until our soldiers are found," U.S. military spokesman Major-General William Caldwell said. Enditem
