BEIRUT, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The Lebanese army said Tuesday it had uncovered a network that allegedly assassinated several Lebanese and Palestinian leaders on behalf of Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.

"The army arrested a terrorist cell working for Israel's Mossad, and its members admitted responsibility for the May 26 attack that killed Mahmoud Mjzoub and his brother," according to a statement from the Army Command.

Mahmoud Mjzoub, a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (Holy War), was killed along with his brother Nidal in a powerful car bomb explosion in the coastal city of Sidon, 40 km south of Beirut.

"The terrorist network has been active in Lebanon for several years. Its members received training inside and outside Israel and were equipped with the latest tools and techniques used by Israel's Mossad to carry out assigned assassinations in Lebanon," the statement added.

The head of the network, Lebanese Mahmoud Abu Rafeh, confessed to masterminding the killing.

The Islamic Jihad accused Israeli intelligence of being behind the attack, but Israel denied any connection with it.

The members of the cell also "admitted taking part in the assassination of Hezbollah (Party of God) officials Ali Saleh in 2003 and Ali Hassan Dib in 1999, as well as the killing of Jihad Jibril in 2002," the statement added. Enditem
