LAGOS, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjohas left the capital Abuja for a scheduled meeting on Monday in New York with his Cameroonian counterpart Paul Biya over Bakassi Peninsula issue, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported on Monday.

    The two presidents are meeting again under the auspices of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in continuation of efforts to reach an amicable understanding on issues of bilateral interests, especially on the disputed oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula lying at the maritime border between the two countries.

    The New York meeting would be the third tripartite meeting among Obasanjo, Biya and Annan in the aftermath of the ruling of the International Court of Justice at The Hague on the border dispute between Nigeria and Cameroon.

    Previous two meetings between the two presidents held in Geneva and Paris.

    The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled in October 2000 that Nigeria should cede part of the oil-rich peninsula to Cameroon while the latter should cede part of Cameroon to Nigeria.

    The two countries consequently formed a joint committee to implement the ruling of the court at The Hague to ease tension between them. Enditem
