GAZA, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ismail Haneya agreed on Wednesday to continue talks over a statehood proposal in a bid to bridge differences and avoid a showdown in a coming referendum. Haneya, who is also a senior leader of the now ruling Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), told reporters after a meeting with Abbas in Gaza that they agreed to continue a national dialogue over the proposal in order to overcome differences. Palestinian legislator Hanan Ashrawi on Tuesday slammed the ruling Islamic
Resistance Movement(Hamas)'s rejection of a referendum on a proposal seeking
statehood which implicitly recognizes Israel. Ashrawi, who is from the Third Way
party in the parliament, told local radio the "Voice of Palestine" that the
plebiscite was a chance to let the Palestinian people have a say on key
political issues, criticizing parliament speaker and senior Hamas leader Aziz
Dweik for terming the referendum as illegal during Monday's parliament session.
