MUNICH, June 9 (Xinhua) -- German president Horst Kohler declared the opening of the 18th World Cup here on Friday.
He inaugurated the tournament at a half-hour-long opening ceremony in the fully-packed Munich World Cup Stadium of 66, 000 capacity.
"The World Cup finally kicks off," said Kohler, who entered the stadium together with FIFA president Sepp Blatter and the 2006 World Cup Organizing Committee president Franz Beckenbauer.
"We are expecting soccer, soccer and soccer in the following four weeks," he said, "Friends from all over the world, welcome to Germany."
"You're now at your friends' home. Munich and every other city of Germany are happy to have you here."
Kohler also extended good wishes for more goals and fair play. Enditem
