WASHINGTON, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Jason Terry scored 12 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter to help the Dallas Mavericks to a 90-80 victory over the Miami Heat in the opener of the NBA Finals on Thursday at American Airlines Center, Dallas.

Dirk Nowitzki went 4-for-14 from the field, but ended with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Mavericks.

Terry, who was held scoreless in the third quarter, went 13-of-18 from the field and Dallas' defense clamped down in the final quarter, limiting the Eastern Conference champions to 5-of-20 shooting over the last 12 minutes.

Josh Howard had 10 points and 12 rebounds, but he and Nowitzki combined to shoot 7-of-28 from the floor.

Dwyane Wade had 28 points to pace the Heat, while Shaquille O'Neal added 17 points and seven rebounds, but made just 1-of-9 foul shots. Miami shot 7-of-19 from the charity stripe to set an NBA Finals record for worst free throw percentage (36.8%).
