KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Some 5,000 people Tuesday rallied peacefully in Dili, capital of Timor-Leste, calling for President Xanana Gusmao to dissolve the parliament and the government, Malaysia's national news services Bernama reported.

The demonstration went on under the supervision of Malaysian peacekeepers and the leader of the demonstrators and former guerrilla leader Major Gusto de Araujo Tara was brought to meet with Gusmao for talks.

Tara handed over a memorandum to Gusmao, requesting that the parliament be dissolved immediately and that the government be brought down, Bernama said.

The memorandum also asked for the formulation of a new transitional government as well as a new parliament under Gusmao within six months.

The demonstrators said in the memo that if the requests were not met within 48 hours, the current parliament and government would be boycotted until the grassroots level.

Gusmao held a press conference after the meeting and urged his people to make peace and end violence.

He said that the problems of violence should be settled first before dealing with internal politics.

Bernama reported that random gunshots were fired as the demonstrators were on the way back, rousing anger again among them who had been calm after the meeting.

They shouted abuse at the unseen gunmen and voiced their fury over incidents of shootouts. The Malaysian troops quickly took control of the situation, Bernama said. Enditem
