Special Report: Worldwide Fight against Bird Flu
LUSAKA, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has
provided Zambia with materials worth nine million U.S. dollars to assist the
country in monitoring bird flu and controlling the disease in case of outbreak.
FAO country representative Dong Qingsong has urged the Zambian government
to learn from the experience of Asian countries on how to control bird flu which
has swept a couple of African countries.
Zambia with its abundant forest and water body is considered to be one of those
African countries that face the threat of bird flu, experts say, though the
outbreak is not yet reported so far.
Dong said after receiving the donation and proper training, the country
should be installed the capacity of detecting bird flu.
"After the training, we want your experts to be able to tell us whether
there is an outbreak or not instead of relying on sending samples to South
Africa or Kenya," Dong was quoted by Tuesday's Zambia Daily Mail when he
delivered the material to the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday.
Dong also noted that the European Union had already given Zambia 200,000 dollars through FAO for bird flu control which was already being used. Enditem
