BEIJING, June 5 -- Beijing's best-seller
lists have been topped by a collaborative work by Junjun and Jacky Xue, stars of
the talent competition My Show and two of China's 50 most beautiful people.
Following the tradition Chinese pop stars use to name
their concerts and albums, the two stars titled the book Close Call after a pun
on their names. It tells the story of their rise from obscurity to fame, with
one star cast as an angel and one as a demon.
Another pop idol, movie star Xu Jinglei, briefly hit
the top ten lists after her book-signing appearance in late May. Her book, a
print collection of her blog posts, was published earlier this year but sales
have so far failed to match the popularity of her online website.
Leading contemporary Chinese author Wang Meng's new
work, An Eventful Half-Life, rose to number five on the general non-fiction list
this week. The first installment in the author's autobiography, the book tells
the story of Wang Meng's early life, including the circumstances surrounding his
stories “Long Live Youth” and “A Young Newcomer to the Organization Department”.
The book sparked an online storm in a tea cup after
an intrepid forum commenter posted a provocative essay attempting to explain why
Wang Meng's father was largely absent from his autobiography.
