SINGAPORE, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Deputy Prime
Minister Najib Razak Sunday proposed the establishment of a regional disaster
relief coordinating center at the fifth Asia Security Summit, also known as the
Shangri-la Dialogue.
"I like to propose the setting up of a regional-based
humanitarian relief coordinating center, by which member states will commit a
set of forces, made up of civilian and military personnel, in the event a
disaster strikes in any part of the region," said Razak, who is also the Defense
Minister.
He urged countries in the region to look at security
and defense issues from a more altruistic perspective to seek common and
comprehensive security for all of their peoples.
Putting forward the notion of building a regional security village, Razak called for a greater level of cooperation in a variety of areas and pooling of wisdom among nations.
Organized by the London-based International Institute
for Strategic Studies (IISS), the three-day dialogue, which ended on Sunday,
gathered some 250 delegates from more than 20 countries and regions in Asia
Pacific, North America and Europe to address major regional security issues.
The annual dialogue has been held at Singapore's
Shangri-la hotel since its inauguration in 2002. Enditem
