BUCHAREST, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Romania's President Traian Basescu left hospital on Friday after two weeks of recovery treatment.

Basescu told reporters at Elias hospital in the capital, Bucharest, that he would be back to work at his office next week.

A doctor in charge of his case said the president might need six months or even one year to recover fully from a back surgery to fix a herniated disc last month.

Basescu was sent to the Vienna University Hospital, Austria, on May 9 for a vertebra operation. He stayed in the hospital 10 days but continued his official work and met a number of foreign and Romanian leaders.

The president was transferred back to Elias hospital on May 16 for recovery treatment and on his second day there he met China's visiting top legislator Wu Bangguo.

Last Tuesday, he flew to Paris for a two-day visit and met the French President Jacques Chirac, seeking French support for Romania's bid to join the European Union on January 1, 2007. Enditem
