GENEVA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is flying aid into violence-hit East Timor, the agency said Friday.
"The airlift is being organized right now and we expect the first flight to leave shortly, "UNHCR chief spokesman Ron Redmond told reporters.
The aid include tents, blankets and other non-food items, He said, adding that an emergency team of 10 to 12 experts will also go there.
The material, now stocked in Amman, Jordan, will be supporting up to 30,000 displaced people, the spokesman said.
Violence erupted in late April after the East Timorese government decided to sack almost half the country's army, who protested against poor conditions and staged a strike.
The UN estimated that about 100,000 people were displaced in the unrest striking the nation which gained independence from Indonesia in 2002. Enditem
