OTTAWA, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Ten people sustained minor injuries after a subway train broke down and was filled with smoke Thursdaymorning in Canada's largest city of Toronto, local media reported.

The injured complained of smoke inhalation after the breakdown at about 9:30 local time sparked the evacuation of the Dupont Station and disrupted service on a line for about an hour.

Some passengers thought they heard popping noises that sounded like gunshots and rushed to get out of the car and the station.

Initial investigation showed that clips and hinges on a cover at the base of the power unit between the wheels of the last car came loose, said Gary Webster, general manager of operations for the Toronto Transit Commission.

The cover disconnected and wedged into the third rail that runsalongside the track. It was dragged along for a short period, causing the sparks and the smoke that entered the train car.

Webster said a transit commission would be investigating the mechanical history of the car. The commission will also check the covers on all subway trains to see whether the problem was isolated or indicative of a larger problem with the design of the clips. Enditem
