85,000 living with HIV in Pakistan in '05: UNAIDS

    ISLAMABAD, May 31 (Xinhua) -- In Pakistan, the number of adults and children living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reached 85,000 in 2005, up from 56,000 in 2003, said a UNAIDS report on Wednesday.

    UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), launched the 2006 Report on the global AIDS epidemic, featuring the latest AIDS estimates and new trends in the epidemic's evolution, on May 31, 2006.

    It said Pakistan will need to improve its prevention efforts if it is to avoid more serious HIV outbreaks,

    It is estimated that in Pakistan, for year 2005, the HIV prevalence rate for adults aged 15 to 49 is 0.1 percent, and the number of adults aged 15 and above living with HIV is 84,000, among which 14,000 are women, the UNAIDS report said.

    For year 2003, the HIV prevalence rate for adults aged 15 to 49 is also 0.1 percent, and the number of adults aged 15 and above living with HIV is 55,000, among which 7,300 are women, it said.

    About 3,000 people died of AIDS in Pakistan in 2005, while in 2003 the corresponding number was 1,500, according to the report. Enditem
