MOSCOW, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Four gunmen were killed and one was detained in a special operation to put down insurgents in Russia's North Caucasus region, a local government spokesman said on Wednesday.

A policeman was also killed and four others wounded in the exchange of fire with the gunmen.

According to Ingushetian Interior Ministry spokesman Nazir Yevloyev, who was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency, the operation began overnight in Chechnya's Achkhoi-Martan district. The gunmen put up resistance, and one was killed while another was wounded. A number of others escaped to Ingushetia neighboring Chechnya, but three were killed after they were spotted in a house in the village of Nesterovskaya.

A further gunman was detained there. Ingushetian and Chechen policemen participated in the operation, and reserves of the operational control group in the republic and special units of Russian interior troops were also called to the battle. Enditem
