Special report:
Hamas-led cabinet takes
office
GAZA, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Spokesman of the Hamas-led
Palestinian cabinet Ghazi Hamad said on Wednesday that the government is not
against a referendum if it serves the interests of the Palestinian people.
Hamad told reporters that the government's stance on
referendum is clear, "all that we want is to give a chance for a national
dialogue to succeed."
The best way to resolve differences among all
factions is to engage in fruitful and constructive dialogue, therefore, "we
should achieve success in this respect as soon as possible," he said.
President Mahmoud Abbas announced earlier that if
factions fail to agree on a document signed and issued by leaders of Palestinian
prisoners in Israeli jails, he would call for a referendum.
The document calls for establishing a Palestinian
state on the 1967 borders, forming a coalition government, approving the Arab
Peace Initiative and recognizing the Palestine Liberation Organization as the
sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinians.
Hamad said that the government came after a process
of democratic election, adding that a referendum needs the approval of the
Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and should include all the Palestinians in
and out of the Palestinian territories. Enditem
