MANAGUA, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Spain had imposed a 10-year ban on any visit by former Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Aleman to the country due to his corruption conviction, the Spanish embassy said in a statement on Tuesday.

The ban, put into effect on May 24, applied to the whole of the European Union, said the statement.

Aleman, who ruled Nicaragua from 1997 to 2002, was sentenced to 20 years in jail for money laundering and corruption in December 2003.

He is serving the sentence at home because of his poor health. Enditem
