More extreme weather forecast for Netherlands
www.chinaview.cn 2006-05-31 06:10:48

BRUSSELS, May 30 (Xinhua) -- The Netherlands will have more extreme weather in the years ahead, Dutch news agency, ANP, quotedmeteorological bureau KNMI as saying on Tuesday.

A long-term KNMI report suggests there will be more frequent heavy downpours during summer. More downpours combined with risingwater levels could lead to increasing flooding in urban areas, it warned.

On the other hand, KNMI predicted more extreme dry and hot summers, with more frequent heatwaves.

Experts believe that by 2050 winter will be on average 0.9 to 2.3 degrees warmer than in 1990. Summers could be 2.9 percent warmerthan was the case 16 years ago.

The long-term weather forecast will be used by the government to help plan water management, spatial planning and to take steps to maximize air quality. Enditem
