Timor-Leste's president intends to sack two ministers

    Dili, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Timor-Leste's President Xanana Gusmao on Tuesday expressed this intention to sack the ministers of defense and the minister of home affairs by the reason of failing to carry out their tasks.

    Xanana said that Defense Minister Rogerio Lobato and Home Affairs Minister Ruque Rodrigues failed to overcome the country's internal problem.

    "I ask, if it is possible, two of them to resign, because they can not be able to address the domestic problems," said Xanana after a two-day emergency meeting at the Presidential Palace.

    Regarding to the current security situation, Xanana called for those who had weapons to hand it over to the international troops.

    Xanana said he would also have a meeting with the country's Security Council on Wednesday.

    Meanwhile, the much criticized Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri would stay for the time being, local reports said, adding that more cabinet changes were expected.

    Earlier, Foreign Minister Jose Ramos Horta said that the government had "failed miserably" to prevent the unrest and directed the blame toward Alkatiri.

    Hundreds of people on Monday staged rallies outside the Presidential Palace, demanding the resignation of Alkatiri and asking President Xanana Gusmao to take over the government. Enditem
