BANGKOK, May 30 (Xinhua) -- The Thai Cabinet has endorsed Election Commission's proposal for new election to be on Oct. 15, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-Ngam announced on Tuesday.
After the weekly cabinet meeting, Wissanu said the cabinet will issue Royal Decree to set new election day soon.
Thailand held its last general election on April 2, but it was boycotted by the three leading opposition parties -- Democrat, Chart Thai and Mahachon -- which argued that it was unfairly set to favor the ruling Thai Rak Thai Party.
The nation has been left for months without a functioning parliament and run by a caretaker government.
The king of Thailand asked the nation's top three courts to help solve the ongoing political crisis.
The Constitutional Court early in May invalidated the April 2 general election based on a lawsuit filed by academics who claimed that the Election Commission had acted too hastily in organizing the polls, and that the elections were unfair.
The court also found that the physical arrangement of polling booths had compromised the secrecy of voters who wished to mark their ballots privately. Enditem
