BEIJING, May 29 -- Chinese director Wang Chao won the main sideline competition at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday with his movie "Luxury Car," the conclusion of a trilogy about life in modern China.

    The film stars Tian Yuan as a prostitute living in the central city of Wuhan, whose father begs her to help find her missing brother before their mother dies.

    It was awarded the top prize in the "Un Certain Regard" section of the festival, which ended late Sunday with a glittering prize-ceremony for the main competition.

    "Luxury Car" follows "The Orphan of Angyang" made in 2001 and "Day and Night" released in 2004, with Wang saying he wanted this film to be more dramatic and represent contemporary China.

    "This is a very accessible auteur film. The characters lead the story and the director's style stays behind," he told Screen International earlier last week.

    A special prize was given to Australian director Rolf de Heers' "Ten Canoes," a tale about Aboriginal life.
