ISLAMABAD, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Three girls were killed by a landmine explosion on Monday in northwestern Pakistan's tribal region bordering Afghanistan, a TV channel report said.

The girls were killed while fetching water in the Bajaur tribalregion, where the government forces have been trying to apprehend militants, the GEO TV reported.

The mine was recently planted, not left over from decades of conflict along the border, Mamoor Khan, a local government official was quoted as saying.

"We have no idea who planted the landmine. We are investigating," said Khan. Enditem
