Singapore to send more earthquake relief teams to Indonesia

    SINGAPORE, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Organizations and hospitals in Singapore will send more relief teams to Indonesia on Tuesday to help earthquake victims there, Channel NewsAsia reported Monday night.

    The Singapore Red Cross is sending its second team of 11 members and at least 20 cartons of medical supplies like bandages,gauze materials and surgical equipment to the affected areas. It'sfirst relief team has been in Indonesia for about two weeks since the eruption of the Mount Merapi volcano earlier this month.

    Non-governmental organization Mercy Relief will also send its second 12-member team to Indonesia while Alexandra Hospital is dispatching five doctors there.

    Both the Singapore Red Cross and Mercy Relief is preparing for their third teams respectively, according to the report.

    Singapore President S. R. Nathan sent a letter to his Indonesian counterpart Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday to convey his sympathies and condolences to the Indonesian people, particularly the disaster victims.

    "If more is needed, Singapore is prepared to provide more humanitarian assistance to help the needy cope with their current circumstances," the president said in his message.

    So far, the Singapore government has sent a 35-member SingaporeArmed Forces medical team, a 43-member Singapore Civil Defense Force disaster assistance and rescue team, as well as 39 tons of equipment and humanitarian aid including tents, sleeping bags, blankets and medical supplies to Indonesia.
