YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia, May 29 (Xinhua) -- A number of countrieshave pledged
aid totaling 47.7 million U.S. dollars for emergency response to Indonesia's
earthquake-stricken Java island, a government spokesman said Monday evening.
"The figure continues to rise, " Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Yuri
Thamrin was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.
The financial aid offers come from Australia, Britain, Canada, China, Cuba,
France, Germany, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Russia,
Singapore, South Korea, the European Union and the United States, he said.
The Indonesian government has given permits for foreign planes carrying
relief supplies and paramedics to land in the quake zone.
Cargo planes from Singapore and Malaysia landed Sunday while those from
China, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States are
expected to arrive from Monday evening. Enditem
