Thai Supreme Court judges to decide whether to nominate EC candidates

BANGKOK, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The full bench of 86 Supreme Court judges sets to convene on Wednesday to debate whether to nominate four candidates for the Senate to pick two to fill vacant seats into the Election Commission (EC) of Thailand.

"Whatever the outcome of the debate should help improving the political situation," high court secretary Wirach Chinwinijkul wasquoted by the web-news of Thai English newspaper the Nation as saying on Monday.

The high court expects the EC to review its own performance relating to the April 2 vote and decide what it can do in line with the national interest, Wirach said.

He was referring to the summit of three top courts two weeks ago calling for the EC members to step aside paving way for the judicial intervention to restore the credibility of the electoral process.

Earlier this month, Thai Constitution Court officially announced the invalidation of the unconstitutional April 2 snap polls after a deliberative verdict on this issue and called for the five-top-member EC to resign. But EC rejected the propose although one of them died and another sent in his papers.

The conflict between the Supreme Court and the EC has made a deadlock to the new round general elections. Enditem
