Special report: Earthquake in Indonesia
BERLIN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Germany had offered 500,000 euros (635,000 U.S. dollars) to assist victims of the earthquake that struck Indonesia's Java Island on Saturday, the German Foreign Office announced on Monday.
The Foreign Office said the emergency aid would be used to support relief efforts by German aid organizations in cooperation with the Indonesian government and local partners.
Some funds would finance the operation of a mobile water purification unit, which is capable of producing enough drinking water for more than 20,000 people, the office said.
The unit, belonging to the German Red Cross, had been in operation on the Island of Sumatra but was now being transferred to the earthquake-stricken areas.
Other support would include emergency medical services and the construction of emergency shelters, the Foreign Office added.
Indonesia's powerful earthquake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, struck the ancient province of Yogyakarta and part of Central Java province on Saturday morning. It has killed more than 5,000 people and left more than 10,000 injured. Enditem |
