Special report: Earthquake in Indonesia
SINGAPORE, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Singapore sent an additional seven tons of humanitarian aid to Indonesia on Monday, according to a statement by Singapore's Ministry of Defense (MINDEF).
The aid, including tents, sleeping bags, blankets and medical supplies, was transported to Indonesia's Adisucipto Airbase by a C-130 aircraft dispatched by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
A 35-member SAF medical team has been deployed in Bantul, the worst-hit area by the earthquake, on the advice of the Indonesian authorities, the statement said.
The team arrived in Indonesia's province of Yogyakarta on Sunday, together with a 43-member Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) disaster assistance and rescue team, as well as 32 tons of equipment and relief supplies.
Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong offered the humanitarian relief assistance and emergency supplies worth a total of 50,000 U.S. dollars in his telephone conversation with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Saturday night.
A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted Yogyakarta and several parts of Central Java at 05:55 local time on Saturday morning (22:55 GMT Friday), leaving over 5,000 people dead, more than 10,000 injured and at least 200,000 homeless so far. Enditem |
