Special report: Earthquake in Indonesia
BANGKOK, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Thai government announced Monday it will donate 100,000 U.S. dollars and 1,000 tones of rice to assist victims of the weekend earthquake in Indonesia.
Government Spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee said that the first 30 tones of rice will be sent to Indonesia on Friday.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Commerce Ministry will coordinate carrying out the task, he said.
Before a special cabinet meeting Monday, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra expressed his condolences to Indonesia over the earthquake that killed thousands of people, Surapong said.
A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia's province of Yogyakarta and several parts of Central Java at 5:55 a.m. local time on Saturday morning (2255 GMT Friday).
The death toll from the earthquake so far has exceeded 5,000 and the quake also left more then 10,000 people injured. Enditem |
